Exactly 60 years after his death, Henry Ford – founder of Ford – would be turning in his grave, the week that it has been announced that Tesla’s market value has overtaken Ford.
Shares in the electric car maker added more than 7% and, at the close of trading, Tesla had a market value of $49bn, ahead of Ford’s value of $46bn.
Henry Ford was an American inventor and automobile manufacturer with a long list of successes throughout his life. In 1903, he and eleven investors signed paperwork to incorporate the Ford Motor Company. In 1908, Ford introduced the low cost, reliable Model T which, by 1918, 50% of all cars in America were this model.
“I will build a motor car for the great multitude … constructed of the best materials, by the best men to be hired, after the simplest designs that modern engineer can devise … so low in price that no man making a good salary will be unable to own one – and enjoy with his family the blessing of pleasure in God’s great open spaces! (Henry Ford, 1909).
